Hi fellow oldies, now I may be too new to picking to really be asking this question, but I am wondering if someone with heaps more experience can pass on some pearls of wisdom. I started off learning tab, but on a recommendation from a fellow BHO member I have accquired Murphy's Method for beginners and happy to report that already a few pleasing notes are coming. I really want to get to a point where I can jam along with other muso's. So with this goal in mind does anyone have a firm view as to which way is likely to get me to my goal, sooner rather than later.

	KenBirmingham says: 1/15/2015 4:40:53 AM Hi, stardust, Theres no quick way to get better faster, I started with the Murphy method and went through Beginning Banjo 1 and some of 2then found tunes I wanted to learn on easy songs for banjos. Got tunes I liked off youtube by Rick McKeon and other people and tried them. What it boils down to is practice, practice and more practice, but use different teachers cos they all dont nessasery play the same tune the same way. Good Luck.

But on the more serious side, Practise every day, there are heaps of tutorials on YouTube and Banjo books galore ... enjoy yourself and once you have developed the necessary calluses on your fretting hand the pain will ease ....cheers ...

	Stardust0262 says: 2/5/2015 2:28:37 AM Hi Banjo Lefty, I'm trying to get in at least 30 minutes of practice a day, so I figure that should hopefully allow me to progress at a steady rate. I don't play any other instrument - just learning on the banjo. :-)
	Banjo Lefty says: 2/5/2015 8:23:08 PM Okay, then you want to practice practice practice, of course, but you're also going to have to learn some music. Do yourself a favour and learn to read tab. Don't get me wrong -- the Murphy Method is great for learning some tunes, but you also need to know how to accent the beats, play to the bar line, etc. This is true of any instrument, not just banjo. Learning to read tab is way easier than learning standard notation, and few players play banjo (or guitar for that matter) from standard notation. Tab is the same as standard music notation anyway when it comes to rythym and timing, which is what you need to learn.
