Last year I posted a request for medium speed songs because...well...age has stunted my ability to develop speed. A few folks responded, but most of those young BHO whipper-snappers just ignored the post. I'm looking for good sounding tunes at 80-115 bpm. So, among friends here, I ask: What medium speed songs do you like?

Hi BJ, many of us are just learning the ropes and are guided by whatever books we follow, but I have found that sometimes when you get a tune runing thro your head that simply by typeing the name of the tune into your browser, it's surprising what you can find, things like Tom dolly, Clementine spring to mind, but we're real lucky we're in the computer age, there's never before been such a wealth of information available, I've got a sleeve folder that I'm filling with tabs of songs I'm busting to play, the printers running hot, but I'm finding that until I can play the tabs fluently, the tune can be hard to recognise, that's where YouTube comes in handy .... I fixed your redundancy BJD. Boil Dem Cabbage Down and Cripple Creek are o. k. slow and you'll be surprised at how soon they start sounding like music. Just keep on picking.

Not really. I'm still sorting through a few. I'll Fly Away, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Down the Road, Long Journey Home, are a few I've been working on and seem to sound good at the slow to medium speeds in final form. I'm still looking for others that are not too complicated at the slower speeds.

I have found that the 'Tabedit' software a great way of hearing the tabs at varying speeds, the free version is good if you don't want to edit the tune... The midi option will switch off the accompaniment so you can hear the actual tune on its own .... Magic happens ... lol

David, What Banjo did you use when recording 'Old Joe Clark'? - I play this every day, just love the Growl of the bass string. - I'm looking to upgrade my Banjo eventually and hoping to find one that sounds similar with that beautiful growl, but my budget is around $1k , anyone go any ideas ... or is it just Pie in the Sky ...?

I don't believe personally that hand speed has anything to do with age- medical studies have proven that the mind stays very flexible and is open to developing new skills,including speeding up. I also believe what you firmly believe about yourself in a lot of respects tells what results you'll get (or not)
Having said that,I think there are those of us who are built for more moderate paced tunes. Even in my youth,I was never lightning quick with the digits. When I was in rock music as a youngster,I simply couldn't fly all over the fretboard as others seemed to do most effortlessly. My talent lay in the slower stuff,like classical guitar and fingerpicking blues tunes. This has shown itself again in bluegrass picking on the banjo. I can get up to a moderate speed,which sounds fine. Ultra fast pickin is just not in my genes,and I've accepted the fact that my gift comes thru more mellow to slow paced tunes. So- enjoy your gift of letting the notes ring out of whatever tune you're playing. Have you tried ballads or 3/4 time tunes? Scottish airs are most cool.

Thanks for the post BanjoBelle. Lately, I've been practicing a lot of songs at medium and slow speeds. Some are written so well they work fast and slow. I've been listening to a variety of Irish and Celtic tunes. I think I'll try some.
