Rolls

From dvanmet on 5/24/2014 5:12:19 PM

As I have no previous experience, how long will it take me to get the hang of simple rolls? Don't know if it's age or my brain but I feel like I should be picking this up faster. In all fairness, I have been at the banjo for 3 weeks, practicing for 30 plus minutes a day.  Perhaps I just need an attitude adjustment.  Any thoughts?

Keep hangin in there mate, plenty of Tutorials on YouTube - I guess you've got some Tableture, Banjo for Dummies is an excellent start, check with your local bookstore ... has a CD too ... cheers

wasted 19 lessons with a teacher affiliated with a music store and gave up. I hooked up with a local guy who plays with the Front Porch Pickers, SSC, FL. After two months I can play about 4 songs - not well but playing anyway. Find a local guy who would be available to help you. Try to learn about 4 measures each time

I hate to keep nagging on this but I am wondering if I should just keep practicing rolls ad nauseum or try to work on simple songs that will incorporate said rolls? Would it be a good idea to set a date, say a week out, and practice a single roll until that date or I am completely comfortable with it? Sorry guys.

No worries, just practicing rolls all night 'makes Jack a dull boy ', I warm up practicing rolls for 5 minutes or so and then play the few pieces I've learned using Tabs, then move on to practice something new, gradually building my repertoire and speed, and try not to nod off to sleep whilst doing this ... lol

I practice rolls every time I pick up the banjo...5 - 10 minutes. Then, just like Phil play a few songs I know, and off to a new song. The learning books take you from song to song with each new song introducing a new technique. I believe this to be a good learning process. Warning: I am still a beginner/intermediate player, so follow at your own risk.

You will most likely notice a little improvement in your technique each day, both right and left hand, slightly perhaps, but never the less the fingers slowly learn to find their way around the strings, never give up ... Cheers

You can't practice rolls too much. But it does tend to get boring. If so, by all means start out on a simple song. Boil Dem Cabbage Down is a good one that uses G,C, D7 chords and also slides, etc.
Cripple Creek is another.
Main thing is to pick as often and as much as you can. Time in the trenches id directly related to picking skill. IMHO.
