Where a Jam Leads You

From Paul R on 5/7/2018 10:09:06 PM

Saturday I played at The Public House in Kingston. The occasion was a fundraiser for Joe's MILL, the Musical Instrument Lending Library. The event took place at clubs all over town, one for blues, one for rock, one for folk, and so on.

There was an on-line registration. I entered for folk and made it well before the deadline. Then there was the wait to confirm. I got a great time slot, 7:15 at a prime downtown location.

Okay, now what? I picked an old-timey repertoire, then realized I needed backup. Not so bad - I was able to recruit three musicians from the Bluegrass Jam: Mary played Bluegrass banjo, Bruce, guitar, and Blair on mandolin. I played guitar and clawhammer banjo. Over a total of three practices, we only had one where all of us were together.

Not to worry, we had it all worked out. We knew the songs and the breaks. All we needed was a good sound system.

Well, we didn't get the sound system. Three mics for four people playing and singing. Did it matter? No! It was the usual loud bar crowd - you don't know if they're listening, for all the noise. However, friends showed up - noisy, raucous, supportive friends. My Texan friend Hal twice shouted for "Rose of San Antone". The second time I called out, "Shut up, Ha!!" When I introduced Bruce, a bunch cheered.

It didn't matter that the sound was lousy, everyone had a good time. I'm already planning for next year.

Great report Paul. Glad it came together and you all enjoyed yourselves. Hopefully you'll stay together and build up a tight repertoire now.

That would be nice, David. Mary and Blair are already in other bands. Since this was a "one off", I said that the name of the group should be "Temporary Insanity".
