OME XX #62 - 1972

From jbalch on 9/9/2014 6:25:47 PM

I snagged this old OME XX model on ebay.  The seller said he purchased it in 1976, played it a couple of years, then put it in climate controlled storage until recently. I believe it too.  The banjo is dirty, but otherwise in truly great shape (especially for its being 42 years old).  Seems all original except perhaps the old gold-plated tuners.  I'm cleaning and setting it up now ... will share the results soon.

That would be 38 yeas old, wouldn't it? :-)

Built in 1972. 42 years ago.

Purchased by the prior owner four years later in 1976.

Ahhh, I see. A 72 banjo and the guy you bought it from got it in '76, which was 38 years ago! My mistake.

The ome website dates serial number 62 to 1972. I emailed the seller seeking more history. I assume he got it used.

My '76 Juggernaut has been my player for ten years. I've visited the shop in Boulder several times and played all the old ODEs and OMEs they have there and I still like mine the best! Hard to see the tone ring in yours, but it looks like the "silverspun". Mine has the same ring.

Chip - this one does have the silverspun ring. I'll add photos as the set-up progresses.

Beautiful banjo.
I'd be interested to know what metals are in your ring. Chuck Ogsbury said he had experimented with several combinations of brass, steel and aluminum. He said he couldn't tell much difference between them.

The Sliverspun is finally coming into it's own at last. I've always though it to be one of the best for any playing style and still do.

For all the aging folks who are finding their Mastertones too heavy, these old Omes are a good alternative; they are lighter, reasonably priced, and are excellent all-round banjos. (Better parts quality, too.)

Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for it? I have a 1976 Ome single X that I paid $700 for. Its worth every penny too!
