Just bought 1977 Single X, like new

From Skwerl on 5/2/2013 4:10:24 PM

I found an Old Virgin. I'm a new banjo player (6 mths), on a beginner level Morgan Monroe. Yesterday I bought a 1977 Single X, serial #1718. Got it from original purchaser.  He had it on craigslist with 3 badly focused photos, that didn't even show the peghead with the brand name. I was astounded when I went to see it. It looks like it just came from the factory. Dealt with his wife, who said it really had never been played. First and only banjo her husband ever bought. Totally perfect condition other than tiny chip on the back of the peghead.  It's at ABQ Guitarworks now, having the head tightened. Ian said the neck is virtually perfect, and it's in amazing condition. Really does look like it's sat in its case in a closet for 36 years. I'm the lucky one !

The tone ring is about 3/4" wide and silver colored, no holes. What is that? Also has  'Keith tuner' type pegs but not like modern ones. These have a positioning post.  I tried to upload photos, couldn't make it work.

Arrgh, I got emails that I got responses from 3 group members, and the links to the comments don't work. And I can't find a link to them in the website. Please pardon my lack of response, it's just that I can't see what you wrote ! BTW, Ian at ABQ Guitarworks has it now. He thinks he can easily tighten the head. Also said it's in astonishing 'like new' condition and that I made a great buy. I'm guessing you all want to know what I paid for it. I got it for $850. The owner had just put on consignment at Candyman Music in Santa Fe for $1,150 (with the stipulation he had the right to pull it out of the shop and sell it himself.) Do you think I got a reasonable deal on it? (Not trying to be cute, I'm a total newbie.)

That's weird, I posted my comment and then the other comments popped up. Anyways, I've now got photos posted in duplicate or triplicate. All my attempts to upload eventually went through, and now I have to delete the extras. I'm learning !

What tone ring is in the SIngle X: I sent an email with the photos to Ome this afternoon asking about the tone ring. I got an email back from Tanya within 3 hours! Here's what she said "Our records from then do not indicate which tone ring. If you can see the tone ring below the tension hoop, as you are holding the banjo in playing position, and the thickness of the rim is 1/2", then it's our Silverspun. If the rim is 3/4" thick then it's a Bluegrass tone ring. Looks likes it's in perfect condition! "
I won't be able to check it until I get it back from the shop.

Hi Joanne --

Small world... I just got done answering your cousin Linda's email -- to me -- about YOUR 'new banjo".

It has the 'skirt' visible under the head's "flesh-hoop" -- so it's a full-blown 'tonering'
OME! That's a bargain -- congrats! Enjoy!
