I own an OME Odyssey and I was wondering how many others do? I don't see many of these around. I love the neck and the workmanship and setup right from the factory is perfect.

Peter what is a Triple-X and what do they sound like? My Odyssey sure is a different sound. I love the banjo, but I'd prefer more a bluegrass sound for my playing.

Just too fancy to take out. I'm not a 1/10th as good as the banjo. I'm building a Richard kit for clawhammer, should arrive next Tuesday. At one point I had all at once a Ome Silver Sweetgrass, Ome Silver engraved Odyssey, Ome Silver Jubilee, Oro Open Back, Oro Bluegrass, Huss and Dalton Open Back, Tranjo #2, Sullivan Festival (I won that in a drawing), Gold Tone 250F kit, Gold Tone Maple kit open back, Martin D28, Seagull guitar and Shen SB-80 up right bass. Now all I have is the Oro Bluegrass, Segull, Prucha and Shen. Feww!!! Thining the herd. The Prucha I think I'll sell next spring. Greg Boyd wants 25% commission to sell a banjo now.

Well, the Triple-X has the Silverspun pot, so it's very un-Mastertone sounding. It's sweeter (and much lighter!), and the sound "surrounds" the pot instead of being pushed out the front. It has a lot of pop, and pulloffs are incredibly precise and snappy.
It has plenty of bass, but not super deep -- just the nature of the design. It sounds great on stage. I get a lot of compliments on it.
What's un-bluegrassy about your Odyssey?

I'd love to hear your banjo live. It seems very nice the way you describe it. By un-bluegrassy I guess I'm saying it doesn't have the sound I'd pick for bluegrass, but has a different quality tone to it.

I'll see if we have any recordings of the Triple-X -- not sure, offhand, but I'll check.
A few years ago, I went to the OME factory in Boulder, and played about 15 banjos. The ones with the Megatone pots sounded pretty bluegrassy to me, but not quite like Mastertones -- more like a Deering Tenbooks, with more sustain and and low end "air" than my ESS. Different tone ring, different flange, different tailpiece -- lots of reasons why it doesn't sound like a Masterclone. But wonderful sounding banjos, to my ear.
If you've got a certain sound in your head, you should definitely try to find the banjo that gives it to you. I wonder if playing around with the setup might get you there?

Interesting that you say that Odyssey sounds like a Tenbrooks. I never heard a Tenbrooks live and would love to try one. If my OME sounds like one, then that's one banjo I won't need t buy. Great! :o)
The action setup from the factory couldn't be more perfect. I wish my other banjos had the action setup like my OME.
I agree with you. I have to fool around a bit with some other bridges and setup differences to see how she goes. I did switch to a REMO head and that sure changed the tone in itself.

Well, I didn't actually try an Odyssey, but I tried several others with similar Megatone components, like the Primrose, Sweetgrass and Monarch. They all sounded similar to each other (same basic tonality, although there were some differences due to setup and being made from different pieces of wood). I'd expect the Odyssey to have a sound that was consistent with those others. They reminded me of the Tenbrooks I'd played. But OMEs tend to have their own personality. It isn't Gibson-like, but it's a great sound. And as you've said, the fit, finish and feel is amazingly good.

Oh, BTW, I'm still on the original frets and nut. I bought my Triple-X new in 1977, and it was my only banjo for 10 years. I've played it about 50% of the time since '87 (when I got an ESS). You can barely see any fret wear.

Are they stainless frets? What gauge strings do you use? The thinner ones cut into the frets more than the fatter strings I hear.

Standard frets, as far as I can tell -- they look like fret materials on my other instruments, and I don't think they were using SS frets at the time. I used to use 10-12-14-22-10, but in the last few years have gone to 10-11-13-20jd-10.

I have owned my Ome Odyssey for almost 2 years now, and so far, I couldn't be any more pleased with it. I have yet to play a banjo that I like more. Something about its ability to produce such a mellow tone really appeals to me.
