Monarch Deluxe question

From donthacker on 12/24/2022 11:09:24 AM

I just bought a 1988 OME Monarch Deluxe from a guy that had it under a bed for quite some time. He bought it from Jeff Scroggins who won it at Winfield for taking 3rd place (Jeff won the following year). I have the award letter and the serial number is 34070, which I’m guessing is 3407; I’m not sure why it has the addl digit but 3407 matches to being a 1988 OME.

I’m wondering what makes it Deluxe. It has a Gibson hole type flange, which may be part of it. I don’t understand what a shoe and plate design is, or how to tell if the tone ring is cast or spun, which seem to be how monarchs were made them. It is curly maple and has a no hole tone ring. I’d love to know more about the specs if anyone would be able to tell me. It plays great and I love the sound. Any help is appreciated! Don

Best thing would be to call or email ome and talk to Tanya, she’s very helpful! As for whether it’s a cast or spin ring, if you take off the resonator and look at it, the spun one doesn’t quite touch the rim on the inside lip. They also are on a thinner rim (1/2” or 5/8” instead of 3/4” for the cast, if memory serves me). I only have this knowledge because I emailed ome with a similar question some years back.

Enjoy the banjo, it spins like a great one!

I emailed Tanya. I also posted some pictures on my profile (the last 5 pics)

I spoke with Chuck. Sounds like what makes it a deluxe is the curly maple.
