From lraborn on 9/4/2015 2:01:37 PM

Banjo Workshop at Gilliam Music

2280 West Main St

Norman, OK

September 26, 2015

10:00AM until 4:00PM or so…

Hosted by Mark Raborn and Chris Talley Armstrong

Join us for a 5-String banjo workshop hosted by Raborn & Armstrong!

https://www.facebook.com/rabornarmstrong

This intensive 5-string banjo workshop is ideally suited for beginning to advanced-level participants and will cover many, MANY aspects of playing banjo. (We will divide the group at different points in the sessions to better accommodate different proficiency levels) From hand-positioning to music theory to rolls, chords and how to make it all work, we’ll help advance your playing, no matter what level you’re at and no matter what banjoistic learning challenges you’ve experienced!

There will be absolutely no pressure on participants to perform, give a speech, or anything else that might make them less than completely comfortable. All skill levels are welcome. Nothing more is required, except a banjo and some ideas about what you want to learn.

Some of the topics to be covered include:

Music Theory as it Applies to Banjo: Only the important stuff and how to use them. This segment also focuses on ‘how to begin playing in jam sessions when you don’t know the music.’

Playing Technique: Does it ever seem like you practice and practice and see little improvement? Sometimes, a subtle technique adjustment will make all the difference.

Fret-board geography: Includes Licks and lines, chords, scales and how to apply them to your playing. This segment also includes Tricks and treats; Tunes and tales and, finally, ‘To capo, or not to capo, that is the question’.

Three primary styles of 3-finger playing. This segment also contains some emphasis on technique and how to get the most from what you have to work with, as well as good ‘back-up’ technique.

Basic instrument set-up

Tunes, Tunes, Tunes!

There will be oodles of tunes to choose from. Be thinking of tunes you’ve wanted to learn and/or work on.

Each participant will receive handouts of tablature and relevant work materials, as well as audio files with tunes we work on, both slow and medium tempo.

It’s like 3-6 months of lessons in one day!

To register, contact Gilliam Music at: 877-321-0080

Or Contact The Bluegrass Shack: 618-475-3678

Cost is $70 and includes lots of take-home materials and follow-up!

I'm not familiar with either teacher, can you provide a video of the instructors playing banjo?

Is there going to be another of these any time soon?
