I would like to get to know other lady banjo players. We seem to be a unique group of Ladies. So where are you from? What brought you to the banjo?
I am from prineville oregon. I live on a small off the grid ranch. I enjoy the sound of the banjo and bluegrass music in general.

I am from Largo, Florida. Sometimes people mistake Largo for Key Largo and get all excited. Then they find out that my Largo is in between St. Pete and Clearwater, in the middle of the state, nowhere near the Key Largo or Key West, and suddenly I am no longer the attractive wintertime tourist destination I had been 2 second ago... Which is allright with me.
My son gave me a guitar for Christmas one year and as a result, I started searching for radio stations that play more acoustic music than anything, and stumbled onto a local community radio station which had a fabulous morning show featuring a healthy amount of acoustic music.
One day I heard a banjo in the background. I didn't know it then, but it was a bluegrass banjo.
Long story short, I was infected with an obsessive desire to learn banjo. Started with bluegrass, then heard Abigail Washburn and switched to clawhammer.
And here I am.

I'm Bobbie, I live near Grand Rapids, Michigan. I've finally come "out of the closet" after many years of struggling with the instrument, and have formed an all girl band called "Liza Jane". As a result, I've learned alot more than I ever expected. I would recommend that if you are in fear of playing with all those incredible men players (you know who I mean), that you to start an all girl band. You'll make leaps and bounds on the instrument because it fully immerses you into the instrument in ways you didn't know could be possible. My 2 Cents!

Hi, I'm Tampa (named after the blues guitarist Tampa Red) and I live in Mebane, N.C. I've admired the banjo since I was a child but have only recently begun playing it. When I was young, my grandmother would take me out to see old friends of hers on weekends; a few of them were guitar and banjo players. They'd sit on their old rickety porch and play up a storm while we listened and sometimes sang… occasionally my grandmother would strike up a bit of flatfooting and I'd join in. Though I loved it all, I was especially taken with the unique look and sound of the banjo and wanted to learn to play it more than anything. Well, it took around thirty years but I'm finally doing it! It was a rocky start though. I bought a banjo about two years ago, tried to teach myself clawhammer style and got REALLY frustrated. After that, my banjo just sat in a closet until late September of this year when I finally broke down and found a banjo instructor. I think it’s the best decision I made all year because I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it. I'm learning so much and having a blast all the while. It's a pleasure to meet you all!

Greetings! I'm Pat and I live in Powder Springs, GA. Small town just outside of Atlanta. I love the banjo because it is such a happy instrument. It has been a long time dream of mine to be able to learn to play the banjo. My precious hubby made my dream come true for Christmas. I am also still learning to play the hammered dulcimer. At least retirement is boring for me. I am having a ball. Happy New Year to all.

Interesting theory. My mom (whom I adore) thinks that women can become better banjo players than most men because of our ability to multi-task. I got to thinking about this and she maybe on to something. I know I can listen to my kids tell me a story, feed the dog, cook dinner and balance my checkbook all at the same time. lol What do you guys think??

Hi! From the first time ever I heard the sound of the banjo I loved it. It wasn't an instrument I ever thought I could own let alone try to play. After I moved to the US and heard the music of a specific group I decided I wanted to give it a try. I didn't have a good start: cheap instrument, an extremely gifted teacher who unfortunately could not teach me what he knew. But I was lucky to discover the MHMethod and bought a descent instrument and am enjoying practicing a LOT! I'm not sure if I will ever be brave enough to record myself and post it her. But I'm working on it.
We are snowbirds, and spend the winter in Hudson, FL. Our homestead is in Vermont. Beautiful state, but way too cold.

Hi, Gals: I just discovered this group and am happy to meet you all.
I live in Portland, Oregon and have been playing banjo since July, 2010. For some reason, at that time I just had a sudden desire to play banjo and bought one for myself.
I've played other string instruments, so have been learning on my own with the help of instructional videos, etc. from Ross Nickerson & Geoff Hohwald.
I've also been attending a jam class/community for adults who want to play bluegrass. It's called TaborGrass and I've met some wonderful folks there.

Hi - I'm from Virginia. I spent a few summers near Rural Retreat Virginia and during this time I went to area fiddler's conventions. One year when I returned home I found a teacher, asked my mother for my grandfather's banjo ( it was in the closet) and off I went! Looking back, it was purely by accident that I learned clawhammer style but it is the style that suits me. I've been playing off and on ever since.

Howdy from Southern California!
I had purchased a student model banjo back in the 90's & was teaching myself using Pete Seegers book-but I was married to a crazymaker who never let me play. Wound up divorcing him,and then wound up taking care of my mom in her later years. The banjo went into it's case & never came out again till this week,when I went & got it out of a storage unit. Hadn't seen it in over 10 years. I do play Irish tenor but have been wanting to get into 5 string again. Clawhammer I believe is where my heart lies. So glad there's an all chick group here!

I'm Lindsey, and Im from Wichita, Kansas.
A few years ago I was dating a guy who took me to a bluegrass festival. After the official festival performances are over, everyone jams in the campground all night on stages that are actually just flat trailers. I fell in love with bluegrass that night. The boy didn't last more than a couple months but here I am a few years later still in love with the banjo!

Like Lindsey, I'm a little late to the party but better late than never! I've been playing banjo since about 1990 and have loved every minute of it. I've only had a few lessons and I would advise anyone getting started to find a good teacher. You might end up with 20 years of only one year experience if you know what I mean. I could be so much farther along if I had gotten a teacher but they are not always easy to find. But I've come a long ways and am proud of where I'm at now. About 5 years ago I put 3 of my grandkids, their Dad, and my husband into a bluegrass band and we've had a lot of adventures together pickin' and grinnin'. I never get tired of my banjo - it soothes me when I'm stressed, refreshes me when I'm tired, and thrills me when I happen to be having a good day. It has never stabbed me in the back, back talked to me, or left me alone. What more can you ask for???

I just saw this group on the Hangout. I am a former Petty Coat Junction band member back in 1987 when Sonya Yoder and Kim Bibb were in the band with myself and Andrea Roberts. I have played since I was 12 years old. I went to South Plains College in Levellend, Tx in 1987-88. I have played with several KS bands including Wheatland Express which also featured Kevin Hendrix (Warp) who is also on the hangout. I played fiddle with that band. I also play dobro and some mandolin. I learned a lot from Alan Munde. My favorites are Alan Munde, JD Crowe, Bela Fleck and Alison Brown. I like to play other things on the banjo besides just straight-ahead Bluegrass. Right now I am working on Dust In The Wind by the famed Kansas rock band.

I am new as well to the Banjo. I live on Orca Island in the State of Washington. We are about 1 hr from Canada. My island,Orcas is in a group of islands known as the San Juans.
