Klezmer Banjo?

From tkocason on 7/19/2011 10:27:12 AM

I was heavy into Israeli Folk dancing a few years back, got to know some of the Klezmer tunes....now I'm playing Banjo! Interseted in combining the two. Let me here from you.

Keith.

Check out the Freilachmakers - Andy Rubin plays clawhammer banjo in a klezmer context that is very natural sounding, and beautiful as well. In a totally different style of klezmer, I also love the banjo on Pincus and the Pig: A Klezmer Tale (narrated by Maurice Sendak). Each character is "played" by an instrument - the cat is played by the banjo. I suspect it is a tenor banjo played with a pick.

Thanks DrT. They sound pretty cool from the samples! Freilachmakers that is.

It's been awhile since I've been on the BHO site, so it was fun to see this group formed. Kol ha-kavod! The marriage of klezmer and the 5-string was made in heaven!

All of Andy Rubin's albums are terrific. I have listened to them numerous times, and still enjoy what I hear. Yes - Kol ha-kavod for the marriage of banjo and Klezmer, indeed.

Another album that is a lot of fun to listen to is Margot Leverett & The Klezmer Mountain Boys. Old time music played in Klezmer style.
