Ok, I've been sorta one upped on another thread about a banjo picture that I couldn't blow up and mis-identified. So I'm a little gun shy to even ask or try to identify this one. But I'm really curious about what appears to be a Style 3 Wreath on your homepage. So, dish please!

Hi Robby,
It's a 1930 KK TB11 conversion. I don't have documentation of much of the conversion, but it does have a style 3 wreath neck inlay. The resonator back MOTS is all brown and gold paint instead of multi-colored. I recently replaced the head and have been really pleased with the way it sounds these days.

Thanks Liz, it's great looking banjo. With the reso sides being stained as such and not being blue or black, it looks like a real deal 3 Wreath in the photo!

Hi Derek. The story I've heard and sticking with is that Jenkins Music in KC special ordered a few of these KK TB11's with unpainted sides to more resemble the style 3. Rod has a twin to this banjo, which makes me think it may be true. He knows more about the history of these instruments than I do.

It seems like I remember the late Bill Kelly talking about these banjos. I think there were a lot of banjos went thru Jenkins Music back in the day. Bill owned more than one banjo that he thought had been sold new thru them.

Bill Kelly is where I got the info about the banjos possibly being from Jenkins music.By the way,Liz,I think they call that backing pearloid.It's silkscreened on there,same as the other 11's but these two are unique in the sides being the same as the 3 of that era. I got mine from my great uncle,who lived in KC for many years.

You know, I miss Bill.....he was always upbeat and friendly, always had some banjo that he wanted you to look at and evaluate for him or maybe just validate what he already knew or thought about it. Had a wealth of banjo knowledge and trivia and a nice collection of old Gibsons, maybe not all of them totally or even partially original, but none the less some of them were absolutely right and even the "impersonators" were nice in there own way. I miss Bill.

I bought this banjo from Bill shortly before he died, so I didn't get to know him beyond our interactions during and after the purchase. He brought several of his vault banjos to the house the day we went to pick up my banjo. Pretty impressive to a novice banjo picker like me. He kept wanting to buy the KK back in those months after I purchased it. I figure it was just to make me feel like I got a deal.

He wanted to buy my Kel REALLY bad......;) Leo Posch and I had talked about going over to see his banjos,but never got around to it. We missed out because life is too busy. That was one rose we should have stopped and sniffed.
I miss him too.....he had 40 yrs of old Gibson knowledge.
