Last night I saw the Travelin’ McCourys at the Bluebird night club in Bloomington. At first I was angry because the sound was not right and you could not hear Rob on the 5. The sound man just shrugged his shoulders and said Rob should be closer to the mic. (Rob was on the mic, the mic was dead). It is a hard venue to watch from as it is 95% standing only and the place was packed. But the vocals were great. Ronnie, fiddler Jason Carter, and bass player Alan Bartran all did great solos and their harmony was top notch. Their guitar player for the night was Kenny Smith! With that line-up the show was great.
But it got even better. At about 40 minutes into the show Michael Cleveland shows up!! He and Jason started it off with twin fiddles on “A Good Women’s Love” and there was no looking back. Seeing the smile on Michaels face as he enjoyed the music coming out was worth the price of admission. And watching him pounding the fiddle with his bow setting the tempos was seeing passion in action. They hit a bunch of traditional tunes and pushed Ronnie to use all his vocal range. It was hard drivin’ and intense and it turned out to be a fantastic night.
Too bad Bloomington can’t put these guys in a better venue where the sound is better and people can sit. But many years ago I saw Del with the band there when I asked him why they were playing such a venue he said: to bring the music to the kids. Boy they brought it. These guys even with out their dad are in the upper echelon of current bluegrass bands. If you ever get a chance to see them, don’t pass on it.
