Hand issues part 2

From Ken_in_IN on 2/23/2012 6:05:28 PM

Saw the hand surgeon today. I have arthritic bone spurs in my thumb, causing the pains I've been experiencing. Choices are wearing a brace to control some of the movement, or surgery. I really don't want to go for surgery at this time, so will settle for the brace. Unfortunately, this pretty much puts me out of commision for Scruggs style playing.  Guess it's time I investigate frailing - at least I think there's less thumb movement. Or perhaps I can use fingers 1, 2, and 3 instead :-)

Sorry to hear that hope you can get the pain lower.

Bummer Ken : ( guess I will try to be the optimist on this and say that as your hand gets better : ) from wearing the brace, you will have learned 2 styles. Wishing you the best on this, I work on jet engines and sometimes my fingers are in precarious positions, even though I really try to be safe things can happen, think about this often. No it wouldn’t end my life if I couldn’t play; it’s that I just started playing last year…………..Prayers for you Rich C:

Ken, Did you go to the Indiana Hand Center in Indy? They are the best in the country. I would guess that the rehab would not be too tough.

My thumb pain has not subsided (sigh). I did just buy a La Petrie Etude guitar to do a little fingerpicking on. So far it doesn't aggravate the thumb as much.

That is a bummer, good you can do the guitar

Had a cyst removed from my first thumb joint on my right hand, along with the thumbnail about 2 months ago. Modified a thumbpick yesterday to exert as little pressure as possible on the scar and picked a little :-)

The thumbnail is grown out about 80%. Slipped a thumbpick on this week and it felt pretty good - pain that I had from the scarring is gone. In addition, the nerve pain I was getting had subsided a lot - doesn't occur too often. Think I'll try a little picking this week and see if it acts up.
