Hear the difference.

From vintagewells on 3/29/2011 11:41:55 AM

Some may be skeptical about a Helix rim sounding different. To me there is a distinctive difference that sets it apart from an traditional banjo rim. More balance, depth to the tone. It would be interesting to see what the sound waves look like compared to others. Have they ever been hooked up to an oscilloscope?

Anyway. the you tube demos give you the sounds quite well. Can't comment on the other sound files at the moment as I'm at school and everything is blocked....don't want to corrupt the youth with that banjer music!!!

I agree that HeliX rim has their own sound. And my Black Walnut seems to get a better voice every day.

An oscilloscope would measure the amplitude of wave length and the frequency. I don't think you would be able to tell between rims though.

That's where the "subjective" ear plays in.

An interesting thought though. I may ask around at work and see if any of the electrical sound engineers have any thoughts.

Whn one records on audacity I can see some differences in the little extras in the wave forms between banjos.
I must be some kind of weirdo, wondering what the waveforms look like between banjos...... Inquiring minds want to know....

I could tell a difference from the first time I plucked it. Compared to the banjos I own it definitely has a fuller sound . Then again the Helix is my expensive american made so I can't really compare to "high end" banjos.

I really don't care about names or prices, a banjo has to sound good to me and fit my style. That is one thing that really bugs me: people will dismiss a banjo without ever trying it, because it is not one of the big names. A lot of excellent banjos out there without the "name" or price tag. I think we saw a lot of that when the Helix was first introduced. It was ugly, and I am so happy and gratified to see this group and the recognition it is recieving. Innovation is progress, but unfortunately, it threatens the experts, and they tend to have narrow minds at times.
