Self taught? Online Videos? Books? Or are there actually any clawhammer/frailing teachers in NS?

All of the above for me. Haven't met any clawhammer teachers in NS. I started off trying to learn Scruggs style but could never quite achieve the sound I wanted. I decided to try clawhammer/frailing; learned the bump-ditty stroke from various YouTube videos, and went on from there. I really love frailing. I play by ear and use any means I can find to learn a new tune: videos, CDs, books, whatever. It's great to know there are other frailers close by and I'd love to get together with the other guys in the area for a jam sessions some time.

I forgot to mention in my last comment that if you are interested in clawhammer books, chapters.indigo.ca is an excellent source. When you open the website type "clawhammer banjo" in the search block in the top right of the web page and it will show the books (most with CDs) that they carry. The prices are better than you can get from NS music stores and even better than most US websites. Plus if your order is over $35 (that would be approx the price of two books) the shipping is free. I've ordered a 2 or 3 books from them and it took less than a week to receive them. Hope this info will be of benefit to you.

I started off frailing with the Costello videos and then purchased the "How and Tao..". I really enjoy Patrick's way of teaching and I think I caught on pretty quick. I've been struggling with where to go next. I purchased the Mike Seeger DVDs but didn't really like them because of all the alternate tunings (and on one dvd different banjos). I did however pick up the thumb lead method from his DVD.
I just picked up two David Holt DVDs and I'm really enjoying them. His way of teaching is more my style and I really enjoy the way he plays. Once I get through these I'll revisit the Seeger DVDs.
I also learned a ton of Old Man Luedecke songs by ear which was great.
It's strange when no one else around plays this way. It would be nice to get some pointers some time.

I used all the Bob Carlin DVD's - which are awesome and a bunch of books for tunes.
We definitely need to tune up an old time jam session sometime soon.

yes sir we do. i've been wanting to do that a while.
i also just learned from youtube. i also met a guy who was in town for a few months from ontario, and he'd been clawhammering like six months longer than me, so i learned the drop thumb and double thumb off of him.
