TB3 WITH RYAN TONE RING (SETUP)

From hugginhound on 8/2/2013 2:42:39 AM

Hi Guys, I have just bought my first conversion, and its sweet !

I was wondering if any body has the same combination of TB3 and Ryan tone ring?

I have just spent the last few days perfecting the neck / pot fit, and I am now getting the stage where I would benefit from  some help/advice regards final setup of head tension etc. or indeed what makes your TB3 sing, I have seen a couple of post that recommend leaving a small gap under the inside lip of the tone ring, is this a good idea?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT FULLY RECEIVED.

Regards Stu.

Hi Stu,

What year is your TB3? Setup is always subjective but will depend on if your Style 3 is maple or mahogany.

As far as setup goes I don't know about leaving the small gap under the inside lip of the tone ring. I've heard of others doing it but I have never experienced that on a banjo before.

So here is my advice based on experience. I've found the Ryan tone ring to be quite shrill for my taste therefore I would recommend calming it down a bit with perhaps Fiberskyn, Black Mylar, or Ren head. That's about the only circumstance I would recommend these heads but they do a good job "calming down" a shrill banjo.

Hi Frankie, Thanks for the reply.
Its a 1928 with a maple neck.
I think I got lucky for once, it sounds beautiful.
When I bought it, the tone was poor, just a huge bass note and not much more, but since I spent some time making every thing fit well, it has come to life. seriously one of the best or may be the best sounding banjo's I have ever heard. I know that it is a bit limited here in the UK.
I called in on Leon Hunt the other day, just to make sure that I was not being to bias about this banjo, and he loved it as well.
This one banjo has pretty much made all my other banjo's redundant. possibly time to sell them all, and track down a ball bearing banjo for sale.

Do you own a TB3 ?

Regards Stu.
