1929 Gibson Style 5

From Porter Claxton on 6/10/2012 8:01:04 PM

I have a 1929 Gibson archtop that I got in California a few years ago. It looks just like Ralph Stanley's and I am told it is a Style 5. The neck matches the the rest of the banjo perfectly as far as style, inlays, aging and color, but I think it may be a conversion because the intricate inlay on the back of the peghead (a fan pattern) may only be half there. I have seen other Style 5's with an additional inlay below the fan pattern. Because so many records were destroyed in a fire, Gibson could not tell me by the serial number alone anything about it. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated

Porter pics would certainly help...there are many readers/followers on the BHO that might even know your particular banjo by a photo or the serial number. Thanks for posting!

Hi Porter,
I have a 1927 TB-5 that I bought as a tenor. I had Frank Neat make a new 5 string neck for it matching the fancy inlay on the back of the peg head, and he did a great job. It is my understanding that the TB-5 was very limited in production, and that they were all tenors. They are beautiful banjos, and I would love to see pictures of it, as well as the serial number.
