That title, taken from a classic Charlie (BIRD) Parker tune by the same name...makes me think of "vintage" in general. How when researching jazz artists in the prime of the beginning of Be-Bop, and into the next generation of fusion, avant garde, and even today...were doing exactly what we do presently with their love and adoration of "vintage instruments".
The old Selmer saxophones, Conn and Selmer trumpets, all had a richness and fullness in tone that the "masters", as well as the "young lions" were trying to get hold of by acquiring "vintage" instruments. So today pre-war Gibsons are the rage in the banjo world...Their tone can be achieved by acquiring an original arched-top or flathead Mastertone...from reasonably affordable...to honey let's mortgage the kids!
Prices on great conversions are cheaper-than-ever!!! You can almost choose the banjo you would have converted since there are so many out there for sale. At one time...there were over 70 banjos in the Gibson section alone. Many of these were very desireable pre-war conversions. So...Now's The Time!!!
So have at it! Grab onto a rim and resonator of the pre-war magic, and put in your favorite tone ring, get a five-string neck made to suit your playing style and start picking! You won't regret it, and you'll SMILE a lot more!!! :0
