G P Matthew S/N 15551

From Stephen John Prior on 3/10/2026 7:22:41 AM

Photos just posted are of a wood rim 5 string Matthew I sold awhile ago. S/N 15551 custom made for the Bros Kirby. The only wood rim Matthew I have seen. From the type of hardware my guess is it was made in the late 1890's.

Matthews made banjos for many contemporary performers. The Brothers Kirby lived in Hockley, Birmingham in the 1890’s where they taught banjo, violin and mandolin. They also toured venues throughout the north of England.
