G.P. Matthew #1165

From EEB on 3/10/2026 2:43:51 AM

This is an early Matthew, 7-string metal flush fret. Rim diameter 11 3/4" with a 24" scale. The low serial number 1165 and rim hardware type suggest a date of manufacture c.1883, one year after he established his independent label business in Aston St, Birmingham. The calf skin head is probably the original workshop-fitted head.

Great to see a Matthew in such original unspoilt condition. Even the tailpiece has survived. The peghead cover engraving style differs from his later patterns. Given the amount of star depictions I wonder if this banjo was a forerunner of the later "Star Trade Mark" instruments he produced ? The hardware has enabled be to identify another unmarked Matthew I have. Thanks for posting.

If you look back through the photos, Keith has posted a very similar Matthew pot, with a near serial number. His skin has a pencil date ‘1887’ but I’m still inclined to think this hardware and neck pattern and 24” scale is a little earlier.
I’m delighted that my photos have identified your banjo. If it is unstamped I wonder if it is an example of a banjo Matthew made for Scotcher & Son before he set up on his own?

The use of metal flush frets may also be informative. It would’ve been as easy, if not easier, to fit as raised frets.

I've just checked and my unstamped Matthew also has an 11 & 3/4 inch rim.

I’d love to see photos when you have time.

Sadly the banjo had been strung with some heavy steel strings. Restoration was underway but due to major surgery I've only just, this week, ventured back into my workshop. I will of course post photos when completed.

Best wishes for a full and complete recovery Steve. Health comes first but I bet it feels good to be back in your workshop even if only briefly at first.

Thanks Mike.
