One Framus fix

From Bart Veerman on 2/5/2014 6:33:21 PM

Their tone rings have some serious casting bumps on the bottom of them. Grinding them flush with the rest of the surface gives them a much better seating on the rim and improves the sound.

Drum Dial tension at 91 makes them sing.

Totally agree with the above.....on my own tenor Framus I went a bit wild and added three layers of 3mm thick maple to the upper inside half of the pot so that there is full contact of the underneath of the pot with the tonring(no "overhang") ,it also gave greater ridgidity and mass to the slightly flimsy ply pot that Framus made for them. Also i always found the screws for the flange and resonator bracket fittings to be too small and short for true streangth so I used small hex head bolts and nuts to go straight through the body for the flange fixings and I used rivitsto attach the resonator brackets.Even when screwed onto the resonator the flange can tend to slide around a bit on the top edge, I made some cork lined blocks to fit between the pot and the resonator on the inside and positioned them at 6 and 4 oclock as the banjo faces you.
Framus are a highly underrated banjo....some Irish TM's won't touch anything else!

I posted a couple of pics of my framuspot reinforcement job on my home page if you want a peek...?I also replace the tuners with some Kluson wafflebacks or some other such geared tuners.......I hang on to the originals but they are mediocre at best.

Nice job John, I bet it sounds a whole lot better now.
What is an "Irish TM?"
