So how many of you guys play your banjo at the station? I take mine with me on all my shifts, but I don't get to play it too often. I just bought a Mike's Mute to see how it works. About the only time I have to practice is late at night in my bunk. Fortunately, I am usually the only one in my bunk room, but I know my playing without a mute can be heard by others in the station. They have commented on it. Trying to find a way to keep practicing without disturbing others.

I didn't take up Banjo until I retired but there was a Lt at one of my stations that did play. He would go out to the picnic table that was behind his station or go in a empty office and play. Nobody objected to it. It really was no louder than all the other noises around the station like traffic, FD radios, TVs etc. A Mike's Mute should make it much quieter. Or you can try putting a towel inside. That will also mute it.

I take mine most shifts, the guys have gotten use to the noise I make, hopefully they will appreciate music once I find how to make my fingers work.

Nothing but good things to say about Mike's Mute. I ordered it on a Tuesday and received it on Friday. Excellent customer service. The mute itself is very good quality. Sturdy little piece of equipment. Easy to use. Just slips right onto the bridge and tightens down. I had been using a Gold Tone mute, and I always seemed to move my bridge as I either put it on or took it off. I tend to put my right hand close to the bridge, and it never gets in the way. And it is quiet. I went into my bunk and had my partner stand outside the door. He said that he could barely hear it, and I was picking pretty hard. I'd say that if you are looking for a banjo mute, you can't go wrong with a Mike's Mute. Just my two cents.

I play my banjo at the station almost every shift. I have "mikesmute" and I use it about 50% of the time. It was well worth the money.
