Fender Concertone custom tenor

From neuronz on 9/10/2016 11:02:43 PM

I have an opportunity to buy a Concertone Custom tenor.  However it appears to have a crack through the heel of the neck.  I assume this has been repaired but I'm concerned that it could break if I were to try to adjust the action of the neck. The neck also has a very slight bow in it.  Would this crack be an issue if I tried to adjust the truss rod?

Thanks for your advice.

Pictures would make it possible to offer advice. But a WELL repaired heel crack should withstand any normal use

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. The crack was about halfway up from the bottom of the heel, went through the carving and could be seen on both sides of the neck. I would guess it was around the area where the lower lag bolt goes into the neck. The banjo had belonged to the current owner's father and he didn't know if it had ever been repaired. If it had, it was a good repair job, but still made me reluctant to buy a banjo where there may be problems. Any ideas as to what it might be worth, given this issue?

as Scott says, a properly-repaired crack will be fine structurally. To effect a proper repair the lag should be removed and after the crack is glued, the lag hole should be re-drilled. Concert Tones are relatively rare and with Artist models currently selling at the $1000-1200 range, a Concert Tone in excellent condition should be in the $1800-2200 range. This one probably would be in the area of $1400-1600 if all else is pristine but the heel crack

Sorry...I just re-read the post and realized the banjo is a tenor. I'd deduct a couple of hundred for each estimate I posted. Nothing against tenors, just a little tighter market niche.

Thanks for the response. This is the Custom model with the carving on the heel and the back of the peg head as well as the gold plating and engraving, so I assume it's a rarer model. None the less, he's asking well over $2200, so I will have to pass on this one, unless he comes down in price.

I'm actually looking for a plectrum Concertone, preferably a Custom one with the engraving and carving. Let me know if you have any leads.
Thanks.
