Hello.  I have an Artist that I ordered from a music store in San Antonio on January 18, 1973. With geared 5th string peg and hard shell case, the total cost was $451.50 plus sales tax.  It arrived and I took delivery on August 1.

Here's the strange thing: the warranty card that came with the banjo says the serial number is 037590.  However, the label on the inside of the rim looks like this:

                                    Artist

                                   04207

                      Fender Musical Instruments

                          Santa Ana, California

"Thy0" appears to the extreme left of the label between the "Artist" and "04207" lines, and "3073" appears to the extreme right.  Both appear to have been  stamped on the label.

I have always assumed that the serial number was 04207, but today was the first time I've looked at the warranty card since I got the instrument.  I'm assuming the number on the card is just a misprint, but does anyone have any other ideas?

I've love playing it for over 40 years, but I share a gripe that others have mentioned: the thing's too heavy.

I know nothing about the serial numbers, but I will agree with you that the Artist is very heavy. I just sit down when I play it. Guys in various bands I have played with don't seem to mind as they look at me as being "the old guy" anyway.

Makes the resale value good- price it per pound!
But you're right they are heavy. Even when I was in my 20's playing my Concertone for (3) 45 minute sets was tough. I don't think I could today.

Thy0 and 3703 are stamps of employees. Final assembly and final setup check. You will probably find names in pencil on the heel end, thats the final wood shop check, maybe others as well. 1973 is to long before I started working there to know who these were
