Hello All, It's time to join this group as I am an avid fan of the U.S. made Fender banjos. My poison is open-backs and in my 'collection' I have an Artist open-back and an Artist long-neck. The quality of construction is impeccable and certainly puts the Gibsons of the same era to shame. I'll look forward to conversations about these fine banjos. Paul

You are correct Paul- when you have owned/ played a vintage Fender, you just can't get away from them? Being a bluegrass nut, and having owned several brands, even older Mastertones, I keep coming back to the walnut Artist and Concertone. You can't get a better playing neck than these vintage Fenders- bar none. Glad to see another Fender Head! Dean

I traded a Gibson copy for a Fender Artist back in 1973. I was a big fan of bill Emerson and Eddie Adcock.i would still have it, except I traded it and some cash for my 1928 Granada. A couple of years ago, I played a Concert Tone briefly in the early 80's.

A couple of years ago, I bought an Artist on eBay and absolutely fell in love with it. Then I bought another from a Hangout remember, but haven't played it yet, as I have to flatten the neck and re-fret it.

I currently play my RK-75 Elite as my main banjo. More about that in a few months. But I haven't played my Granada in several years. I also have a really good Sullivan Festival deLuxe that I play occasionally, but I am a fan of walnut banjos, so my maple banjos stay encased. I have two Lane top-tension walnut banjos that I seldom play out of the house.

The California Fenders and Baldwin C & D are the banjos that defined "new" bluegrass banjos in the 70's. Gibson just didn't have it right. I think the Fender and Baldwin are the sleepers in the market and will take their rightful place in the vintage market in not too many years.

Had a problem with editing in the first paragraph. I don't know any way to edit the blog.

I agree with you BeeGee- the California Fenders and Baldwin ODE C and D's are the sleepers. Like you, I am a walnut fan; and a longer scale length fan too;that's why I have both an ODE and Artist banjo now.
