I picked up a Fender Concert Tone Custom a few months ago. It's in very nice shape, original case, etc. I decided to have the frets redone so I took off the neck and noticed that down on the heel is stamped S 101. Any body know what S 101 might mean? Thanks

Reach out Scott Zimmerman (Desert Rose) on the Hangout. He worked at Fender and would have the best recollection of who this person was that assembled your Concert Tone Deluxe. Do you have pictures? We would love to see it. I own a Concert Tone Deluxe myself, “LJ” assembled mine (Linda Johnson) according to Scott. He also handled the last Concert Tones that came off the line. BTW- There are less than 25 Concert Tone Deluxe 5 string flat head banjos produced in California. Again, information from Scott.

rbfour5 I neglected to mention that mine is a plectrum, archtop, it's a very nice banjo. I have some photos and I'll see if I can figure out how to post them. I did reach out to Desert Rose (Scott). John Gill

AFAIK, the numbers are meaningless in the overall scheme of things. Serial numbers cannot be used to determine production dates and pencilled markings were likely just job-lot numbers during production. We'd love to see pictures.

The penciled letters, numbers were associated to the person assembling the California Fenders. Scott used the markings on my Deluxe to identify the person which gave him a year(s) range that person was performing the assembly. Bee Gee is right about the serial number label- they are meaningless other than identifying they were California made.

Hi Beegee and rbfour5 I know that the serial numbers are useless. My serial number is 00767 but I know it means nothing. I'm talking about the bottom end of the neck on the heel is stamped S101. This is not ink or pencil, the letters and numbers are actually stamped into the wood. Thanks for the replies. I'll see if Desert Rose has any thoughts on the subject. Regards John Gill
