Hi Guys, just joined, as well as just started trying to play Bluegrass Banjo. I have made some progress on my cheap Chinese 5 string; I sound less like water dropping in a bucket. I suppose like every other new player I want to sound like Earl now, not years down the line, but I must be getting more patience as I get older cos I recognise its gonna take ages before I can play full songs.

At the moment I am internet and book learning, as advised by more than one person. Once I get to the end of the book I should be ready for some one on one teaching; to get rid of my bad habits if nothing else.

Picks are my current issue, thumb pick to be precise. So for now, I play better without any, can do most things with finger picks and HATE thumb picks. But I keep trying!!

I am at Hilton with a load of guys at the end of January so I am hoping I will be better by then.

Wish I had, but now I'm making up for lost time :) I started with Bluegrass then switched to Clawhammer, but still dabble with BG. I've realized too that learning the banjo takes time, lots of time; but I'm in for the long haul. Good luck & hope you get the thumb pick issue sorted soon. That's pretty important.
	Torben Pedersen says: 10/24/2012 1:31:00 AM Hi, yes it takes time. Many years I played my old Framus banjo, as i was a guitar. I didn`t know better. About 5 years ago I began to learn the three finger picking. Today its going ok. But not many in my area play the Bluegrass, So I also, sometimes, use the 5 strings, to Irish and Scottish music.
