Adjusting Tradesman Truss Rod

From bsnider on 7/10/2023 8:08:35 AM

Hi All,

The crazy humidity this summer has played hell with the neck on my Tradesman, so I'll need to adjust the truss rod. I'm comfortable with the process, but to avoid neck-off/neck-on trial and error: Any suggestions about how much relief I should dial in before reinstalling the neck to account for string tension? I'm using a 1/2" bridge on this instrument and shoot for 1/8" action at the 12th fret.

Thanks,

Bruce

How old is your Tradesman? What is the number on the dowel stick?
I didn't put adjustable truss rods in Tradesman before 2014, just a carbon fiber rod.
I don't like using the truss rod to adjust the action, I'd rather use different height bridges, I normally adjust the truss rod so the neck is flat, no relief when unstrung.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the quick reply. My Tradesman is 1247, so it has a truss rod. I'll adjust it so the fretboard is flat; it's got excess relief at the moment.

Best,
Bruce

Just did the job, and all is well. Fretboard flat, action low, no buzz. Boom!

Thanks again, Kevin, for the advice and for the excellent banjo.

Kevin,
One more question: How much oomph should I apply in setting the neck wedge? I just pushed it in thumb-tight for now.

Thanks,
Bruce
