"Adah"

From JanetB on 6/20/2017 6:52:50 PM

I'm rather excited about this new banjo I bought from Doc Huff last week.  It's as short scale a scale as he's probably ever made -- 18" -- but plays in the standard banjo tunings I use so much, like open G, open A, double C, double D, sawmill and others.  Here's what "Adah" looks and sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZowU5BTm6w

I'll be looking through this group's post to see what other Hangout members have discovered about their Doc's banjo.  There doesn't appear to me much.

Congratulations! You will surely have much fun with this gem!
What strings are you using? Steel or nylon?
Do you play in e.g. "real" G-tuning ordo you tune up to A (without using the any capo) - concerning the shorter scale?

I'd been wanting a wood tone ring anyway. Doc's Banjos have the added dimension of beautiful woodwork throughout, as well as his personal story of each kind of wood. Plus some of the wood is from Africa -- very appropriate for a banjo, as well as being the location of his work as a doctor.

Thanks for commenting!

I discovered that the strings are Aquila Minstrel. These are the same ones I put on my cello banjo, which doesn't go as low as the octave below standard A or G I used to get with the steel strings that came with it, but I like the feel of the strings better and they're lower than a regular banjo.

However, on the small scale Doc's Banjo they allow me to play at the same pitch as a regular banjo. Get it? My Gold-Tone mini-banjo might like those, too. I was disappointed with it when I couldn't tune it to standard tuning, but maybe with nylgut minstrel banjos I could....

I wonder if Doc did that on purpose. I'll have to see what his regular-sized banjos are strung with.
