2004 Blackjack tone ring

From Lonesome Will on 6/2/2016 10:21:58 AM

Hello!

I finally got around to taking my 2004 Blackjack apart. The tone ring has the Gibson logo but no serial number. I did not have a scale to weigh it and so I cleaned it up and reassembled it.  My question is this.  Does this virtually garauntee that the ring is a PM and not a Crowe?  Thanks,  Will.

About the only way to tell for sure is if the ring weighs just under 3 pounds. Most Crowe rings were stamped and serial numbered. My Blackjack came with no Gibson and no numbers on it but it weighed 2 lbs. 14.? ozs. I sent it to Bill Sullivan to verify it was a Crowe ring and after verifying it was he put the Gibson stamp and a serial number on it for me so there would be no doubt in the future. I have seen one PM ring on an RB 250 with a Gibson stamp on it and I have seen a PM ring with a 3 digit serial number. I have a Retro 4 and I believe these all had PM rings and mine has a 3 digit serial number. They are good rings as well, but I believe the Crowe rings are the best rings that Gibson put in a banjo during Crowe and Blackjack days. They also put them in other banjos as well. My RB-6 has one and it is one fine sounding banjo for sure. I have heard that in the end times of Gibson banjo production there were some Crowe rings produced that weighed ~ 3 lbs 4ozs., but those would I've never seen one and they would be rare as hen's teeth.
