I know that they say to not get too attached to tablature but most of the ones that teach on Youtube only put part of the lesson on there and expect one to buy the whole lesson but mI am on a fixed income and cannot do that very often. So if not tablature how is one supposed to learn to play the Banjo?

	RJWMitchell says: 7/1/2015 8:42:26 PM I too do not subscribe to on-line lessons or buy lessons - for similar reasons. I either arrange my own tabs or play by ear (not good at playing by ear!). When arranging I work out the melody or download it, then reduce it to quavers/eighth notes, work out or find out the chord progression, then fill in the missing quaver/eighth notes with something that sounds good to me and fits with the chord progression. So much for banjo leads or solos. For backup I work out the chord progression and find a roll that fits the feel of the piece and go for it.

	RJWMitchell says: 7/2/2015 2:38:05 PM Learn to fake it. Learn the chords and chord forms for the keys of C, G, D, A (, E, F) majors and learn to recognise what they are on guitar. Learn the I, IIm, IIIm, IV, V, V7, I6, VIm for each of the C G D A majors. Practice rolling through songs - singing them and trying yourself to figure out the chords. Lots of free download melody plus chords info on the web. Learn some basic licks for G, D, C. Learn to chop and strum as well as roll. In a jam, keep your eye on the other banjoists and pick up on what chords they are playing in backup, do the same with the guitarists if no banjoist. Before a song/tune starts ask what key it is in. If you are given a solo stick to rolling through the chord progression at first. There is lots of great free download learning and jamming advice on the WWW - especially the banjo-hangout. But you need to go beyond that admittedly basic stuff and experiment for yourself.
