A la Flat Stanley

From Carol on 3/18/2011 6:18:27 PM

I'm hiking up to Preaching Rock (North Georgia:  10 miles round trip) tomorrow and I thought I'd stick my little open back in the day pack and have me a religious experience on the mountaintop!  This brought to mind the project that each of my kids did in school -- the one where they color a cut out picture of "Flat Stanley" and then take pictures of themselves (or send it to distant relatives) posing with Stanley.  Perhaps you know of this?  Anyway, I thought that it might be interesting to know just where all you've schlepped your banjo to.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Probably like you, I have my "nice" banjo and then I have my open back traveler banjo I like to take when camping, etc. It has a shorter neck with only 19.5 frets.

Where is Preaching Rock? I grew up in North GA and have hiked the west and east sides of the state a lot.

Went to American Banjo Camp in Flagler, Wash. with the "nice" banjo. (This included flying with it, putting it under the seat in front of me, and schlepping through airports, all 14 lbs of it, in the hard shell case too. What a mistake!. That thing was a pain and so heavy. After that trip, I got a "travel" banjo. (Openback) I take it everywhere with me. Took it to work and played at a staff meeting.

Lynn, don't you love your little travel banjo? Mine is a goldtone and the only thing I don't like about it really has to do with the soft case and how the tuning pegs get turned when packing and unpacking it.

Stacey, I think I have the exact same little Goldtone and I have the same problem with the case. I bought some material and thought I'd make myself a new one -- that was about 3 years ago and I still haven't got around to it! Preaching Rock is up on the AT heading North out of Woody Gap. I went up via Dockery Lake trail and it was fantastic. I was the only person on that trail (4 miles), but the AT was another story -- tons of people starting the long trek north at this time of year. The view was great (I got up there at 11 am and the haze was lifting). I strummed awhile, at a PBJ, and then headed back down. Lynn, is one arm longer than the other after lugging your good banjo through airports, etc...?!

I brought a little travel-sized guitar to Japan when I went to Okinawa with my daughter several years ago...I missed my banjo so much I ended up buying a shamisen.
