I have had this banjo for a few months but have been traveling since I picked it up from Mike at the end of May. Because I was going from the rainy Oregon Coast through Idaho (Weiser)  and other dry states, then on to Clifftop and then the Maine coast, I decided to leave the original head in place a I didn't want to subject a skin head to extremes of temperature and humidity.

I am back in Idaho for a couple of weeks and ordered a new head from John Balch. It's the best thing you can do for  a Ramsey and takes his signature warm full sound and improves it significantly, IMHO.

The change in humidity required ALL the brackets bolts a turn or two to tighten them.

Edit: I was referring to the slot headed bolts that hold the brackets on, not the tension nuts.

Wow Bob that looks great! I agree that a Balch head is one of the nicest upgrades that one could do for their Ramsey, and John is one of the best gentleman that I have ever done business with.

I have two heads from John and am amazed how well they do in New England's humidity ..The head would have been fine on your trip ..I use a taller home made bridge and Nylgut strings with the Balch head and love the combination ...

I WAS in New England and you are right if one STAYS in New England. Was on The Vineyard, Maine Coast and Salem and a couple days later was in 5% humidity at 8000 feet in Montana. It not just the head but also the rim and neck that changes. I have a Balch head on my other 12" Ramsey and am always amazed at how stable it is but I opted for mylar based on the extremes of this summer's travels.
