Crown Height

From mrbuster on 9/5/2014 6:28:18 PM

Does Mike Ramsey use the same crown height on all his banjo heads?  I have a Bacon and I changed the head to an 11 inch fiberskin high crown and it's just not the same. The tension hoop is raised a little above the head and my action is lower. I'm very new to this so I'm learning. Thanks.

The hight of the tension hoop is not related to the action. The action will be a function of head tension, and if the action is lower, then the tension on your head is lower that the previous head.

Thanks bob. Yeah I just noticed that after I had put the fiberskin on, the tension hoop was raised about 1/8 inch above the head and the action was lower...not saying it was the tension hoops fault, just an observation I made. I think the action was the new heads fault. I just put the Renaissance head back on and every thing is great again. I love the sound of the renaissance compared to the fiberskin....I just like the way the fiberskin looks and I wanted to warm the sound up about 10 percent. The fiberskin killed the tone A LOT so I had to take it off. I stuff my banjo with a micro fiber cloth and a new med. moon bridge and it sounds pretty good.

Oh yeah, do you know what crown height Mike uses. Low, Med. High or custom

I put a high-crown fiberskyn on my Ramsey "Electric" with the scalloped tone-ring; warmed up the sound just right and the highs are still there, just not as piercing as before. Oh yea and fits just like the renaissance that originally came with it.

I also put a fiberskin on my Reiter Whyte Laydie but just changed to a Renaissance head last week to play with the sound a bit. The trick is to make sure the fiberskin is tight enough. The rennaissance is the thinnest head made and needs to be tighter to sound decent so the action will be higher unless you crank the Renaissance up a bit. Note the original string height with a feeler gauge, coin or fine rule and then crank the fiberskin up to the original string height. You may like the sound you get.

I hear quite a few positive comments concerning skin-heads here on the Hang-Out; are there any Ramsey owners out there that have put a skin-head on their Ramsey?

If so could you share your experience from using them, be it positive or negative?

Thanks

Have a John Balch goat skin head on mine. Sounds great!

Just ordered a JBalch goatskin head for my walnut "Woody"; as soon as I mount it and tune it I'll send you guys a sound-clip :-)

Keep on pickin' awesome banjo folk!

Cool. Yeah I just sent JBalch a friend request because I might consider putting a real skin head on my Bacon
