Serial Listings

From BDCA on 7/18/2018 7:30:40 PM

Is there a listing of serials / years anywhere? I checked the website and he didn't have any thing related to dating his banjos.

He was at banjo 2400 in 2011. He made about 120 banjos per year until that point, so you could do the math to get an approximation.

I have a banjo Zepp gave away at Hoppin Johns 2009 which, knowing Mike, was probably completed the day before the festival. I just purchased a banjo which is 12 digits higher so I assume mid September 2009 but not sure if it was one of Mikes reserved numbers. 2130. My other Ramsey is close to 3000, 2990 +-. It was a custom Mike made for me in 3 weeks. That was a couple of years ago and he mentioned that when he hits 3000, he's going to slow down and maybe retire. However the next time I visited he had passed 3000 and was working on at least a dozen banjos, a VW microbus, wine and a new car lift.

Wile it's hardly complete, I do still have inventory records of ca. 100 of Mike's banjos that were shipped to me, that include their serial numbers and dates of arrival. I also have inventory records of some used instruments for which I recorded the model years.

My records begin in 1998 and end in 2015, but I received enough of his banjos--new an used--that I can often bracket them to suggest a year of manufacture. Just PM me...

Cheers,
ZEPP
