Friends

I know I'm not the most active group owner or even the most active poster on BHO.  So, I'm reticent to issue edicts as if I'm "in the know" about things and have a greater sense of propriety than others.  I'm the first to defend the adage:  we all have a right to our opinion.

I started the Ramsey Banjo Owners group because I'm a big fan of Mike's banjos.

I consider myself fortunate to be the owner of a Maple Special.  I'm also grateful that when I purchased the banjo, I made arrangements to visit Mike's Appomattox workshop to take possession of the instrument.  Mike was absolutely wonderful to visit with, and despite my best efforts to reduce the amount of time I was taking from him, he gave me a tour of the shop, his procedures, his history, and his hopes -- even served coffee and played the banjo himself.  It was a wonderful afternoon.

I also know that Mike . . . just isn't an internet/email kind of guy.  When I started this group, I sent him an email apologizing for doing so without asking him and offering to hand it over to him or his agent.  To this day:  no response.  (Mike was also suppose to send me a t-shirt "as soon as they came in" . . . to this day . . .)

His friends testify that he's always been this way . . . still . . .

I'd like for this group to be more about the banjos and not so much about the banjo maker.

I think it's okay to say the work "isn't what it used to be," (if you truly feel that way) . . . but I want us to be more judicious about what we say about Mike and each other.  You just never know what someone is dealing with/going through . . . I've heard lots of stories about other banjo makers . . . but people still love the instruments they produce.

I'm not saying a word of caution isn't needed on how we spend our money -- but rather than recount stories of "poor customer service," let's learn a lesson:  rather than deal with Mike, go through one of his dealers.  Reputable dealers (and there are many) want to make things right for their customers.  If a particular instrument isn't up to par, let them fix it for you.  If you want to order something special, go through them; let them "push" to get the order completed.

So, here's what I want to ask of all of you:  if you have future comments to make about Mike's personal dealings:  find another place on this huge, diverse forum to do so?

I don't want to offend anyone, but when someone visits here, I'd like for them to learn about the instruments and the music . . .

Thanks

I love 12" Electric.
Hope those that need to vent frustration from whatever source find an outlet.
