Purchasing from the US

From Gudfala on 7/28/2011 6:53:03 PM

Greetings fellow Canberra Banjoneers,

After a couple of years of playing clawhammer on an Epiphone MB-250, I decided to upgrade to an open-back. I wasn't particularly enamored with the models offered by Australian-builders (nor did I want to wait six-months for a custom) so I ended up ordering a whyte-laydie style cherry open-back built by BHO member Roy Smith through Zepp Music.

It took about a month from the time I finalised payment to get it - and three of those weeks were taken up by getting it through Customs. I had to pay 10% GST (on cost and shipping) and 5% duty (for some reason the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement doesn't apply to banjos).

It was completely worth it - the banjo is amazing. I'll put some photos up on my homepage when I get around to it. If anyone is considering taking advantage of the strong dollar and importing I'd be happy to run you through the process.

Cheers,

Joe

Nice one Joe. Yup, the Aussie dollar is the strongest it's been ever. Notwithstanding the customs and duties you need to pay it is the right time to buy from the US.....unless you can avoid the customs and duties ;)

excuse my ignorance, but re: customs & duties, was it because it was imported as a NEW item, or does the same apply to a used one??
I'm also lookin' at ordering from the US.
Regrds- Sid

Sid - unfortunately they charge GST and Duty on anything with a declared value of over $1,000 regardless of whether it is new or not.
