Some Local Resources

Hi Guys,

I have been getting around lately and continuing to gather some local resources to assist in my effort to commence learning the Banjo and purchasing one. The following are some people I've met and advice i have been given so far.

​Tony Hunter​ a Banjo tutor in Griffith (02 6295 2957) who i spoke with today on the phone. He came recommended to me by John T (5Wires on BHO) and Rowan at Pro Audio in Fyshwick. Tony was able to provide me some information I hadn't found yet including some new idea's on locating a Banjo for myself. He quoted his tutoring at $30 per half hour.

​Marcus Amann - http://www.marcusamann.com/about - A writer, comedian, and musician who specialises in 5 string, 3 finger Scruggs. I could not find a specific advertisement for Marcus as a Banjo teacher but he is currently teaching Dingoman25 (thanks for the tip Dingo) and I think he owns www.howtoplaybanjo.net, a blog on Banjo playing, but it has not been updated since 2009 and contains very little content.

​Rowan​ at Pro Audio in Fyshwick. I went there last week and he was very helpful and knowledgeable about Banjo's (as he is a player), where they are made, quality recommendations etc. He recommended i speak with Tony Hunter and showed me a catalog of Banjo's he can order in for me, and quoted me on the price of a new one well under the RRP (I'm still holding out to see if i can get something better). 

​Monaro Folk Society​, as recommended to me by Tony Hunter to see if they knew anyone in the area trading/selling Banjo's. I've yet to get in touch with them.

All the 3-finger teachers I've run into can't teach frailing, for example. Jim, I also live in O'Connor... and am called Jim :) What style do you play?
