I have a Brooks Spartan banjo with a rolled brass tone ring. I noticed that there was some tape around the ring as it sat under the Ren head. I removed the head, and found clear packing tape wound once around the tone ring where the two ends meet. When I pinged the ring, it sounded dull. I then removed the tape, buffed the ring ends so there would be no sharp edges to damage the banjo head, and reassembled and re strung the banjo. I thought it gave the instrument a clearer, more defined tone, but did not add "clang" to the tone. Has anyone else out there with a Brooks banjo rolled brass tone ring noticed this? Did you take the tape off?
Brooks wrote to me that he does this to prevent damage to the banjo head. At this time, after 3 years, the Ren head is just fine. Some time I will put a hide head on it and see what happens.
