Sliding Delta ...

From Paul R on 3/14/2015 11:03:56 PM

... is the title of Michael Jerome Browne's latest album. I'd heard him occasionally on radio. When I heard the title track, I decided to buy the CD.

Browne is a Montreal-based acoustic (and occasionally electric) country blues artist and multi-instrumentalist. On this album ne plays a variety of guitars (including twelve-string), mandolin, and banjo on two cuts. He even lists the instrument used on each track and the tuning.

His banjo is a Bill Rickard Maple Ridge with a twelve-inch pot and a calfskin head.

He's such a talented performer; now I can't wait to see him in concert.

I'm about 15 years older than Michael, but i first met him at a party when he was a kid, sitting in the corner playing amazing guitar along with anyone ese that was playing anything. Shortly thereafter, I put Michael on stage doing a guest set when I was performing when he was just 14. Then, at 15, he joined my informal back-up band. Later, for several years we performed as a duo, and then as two members of a band. I guess Michael was about 21 when he struck out on his own. He does credit me with being the model for his banjo playing - but I didn't actually teach him anything, he just watched and listened and then went home, worked it out, and came back playing better than me. It's very gratifying to see him turning into the legendary old bluesman I always knew was in the kid I met at that party.

Why am I not surprised at your influence on him, Marc? I think Michael Jerome Browne may be the Montreal equivalent of Colin Linden in Toronto. I recall seeing Colin at a Mariposa Folk Festival, standing under a tree belting out a song, sounding like an old Delta blues man - at the age of about fourteen. Isn't it good to see young talent mature and achieve success?
