Bluegrass Gospel Roots

From Steve Bruce on 3/2/2011 2:21:14 PM

Hey everyone.  I thought it would be nice if you could post your roots to Bluegrass Gospel music.  Mine go back to my youth in the 60's.  My dad was the banjo player in a group in the Cincinnati area called "The Friendship Trio".  They were a popular local and regional group and played in churches in several states.  The house I grew up in was filled with the music of Jimmy Martin, Flatt & Scruggs, Stanley Bros., Reno & Smiley.  My dad was a big J.D. Crowe fan in the 50's and 60's and still is today.  What are your roots in Bluegrass Gospel music?

Thanks,

Steve Bruce

Mine were started in the late 50's & cont'd into the 60's by a mixture of 33's & 78's of Southern Gospel and bluegrass. I received weekly doses of Bill Monroe along with Flatt & Scruggs, Snuffy Jenkins & the old hired hands. Some Jimmy Martin. Along with listening to the Opry on radio.

Ralph & Carter: the Stanley Brothers. I grew up in New England just south of Vermont in Massachusetts. We spent most of our summers on my grandmothers Ozark farm in SW Missouri and that is where I started hearing and liking country music. In the 70's while living in Las Vegas of all places, a musician there told me about Ralph Stanly and how soulful he was. He said he always had the right note in the right place. I listened and he was right.

Now I have over 50 either Ralph or the Stanley Brother Albums and I still consider them to be my favorites. To me they are the next best thing to being in church.
I also love the work of Bill Monroe (his quartet gospel is as good as it gets) Doyle Lawson's gospel fires me up big time, the little work Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen did in this field and Don Reno was a treasure in it. Jimmy Martin also did some great gospel.
Some good stuff.
Ken
