Sorry commented first. Then read your other post. I'm not sure what to tell you.

I am a beginner myself, so I'm not sure if I can give you any help. What tuning are you using, open G or something else. In an open G tuning the 5th string should be 1 octave above the 3rd string and 5 half tones above the first string:
g D G B D The 9 gauge strings should be fine for both the 1st and 5th strings. Is it possible that you are trying to tune the 5th string an octave too high, I can't think of any reason that it would not reach the high g. I hope I have given you some ideas.
One other thing, what are you using to tunu , electronic tuner, pitch pipe, keyboard?

thanks for the advice, i was tuning it right the string was just really tight at first, its fine now. i am using a tuner app on my phone until i can get a little money to buy a electric tuner

Glad it worked out. Enjoy. you seem to be a quick study. Me, I'm kinda slow (2 x wives would agree)

Howdy BanjoBoyBaker - at first I thought you wanted to restring but it looks like you needed tuning advice. And it looks like you got it figured out. Have fun playing bluegrass gospel - it is the best music there is!
