Go to John Boulding's LOTW (Lick of the week) and he explains playing in different keys. I think you will find many lessons John has there that will be of great interest to you. He is an outstanding teacher and player and has posted many lessons.

Capos are simple. To play in A, just put it on the 2nd fret and hook your 5th string up two frets. Now you can play the G chords but they'll sound a whole step higher in A. Your capo becomes like the nut. If you don't have 5th string spikes, then you can use a 5th string capo.

Yes i also play with a capo and though i'm mostly a 5 string picker i do play some songs clawhammer style . I had a fifth string capo that's a slide nut for the fifth string so can capo with all 5 strings using the other capo along with this . You may have mixed awnsers on using one but for me it has always been about what works the best for me and that does and i don't pay much attention to what i call" music politics" of so and so says ..... It's what works best for you . Some songs just plain sound better and clear played in G but capo'ed to A or b flat . Some clawhammer and scruggs picker books even recomend it . I like it also to put the banjo up higher like i like to play , man of constant sorrow and capo to b flat (3rd fret) and would'nt be able to do song right otherwise . There's other ways to change the banjo sound so you can learn down the road also like i some times clawhammer and change the sound of banjo by taking the 2nd and 4th string and tuning to C instead of d and b . There's diffrent ones to try you might like in banjo books . Also if you get a fifth string capo you can get 5 or 8 inch and 5 is what alot use but i have an 8 inch and should have pro install for you . I use shubb capo stuff by the way . Happy new years to all .
