I have enjoyed reading the posts on all of your Gospel BG Roots and thought I would add mine.
I too was raised in a Christian home in the middle of NYC. It seemed we went to church everytime the door was open... Sunday mornings, Sunday nights, Wed. night prayer meetings, and all other weekly activities. My dad was a trumpet player and my mom played the accordian. Sunday nights after church a group of folks would come back to our home and we would sit around an play and sing hymns and gospel music. It actually was a jam session of sorts. My dad taught me to play the trumpet and my mom taught me the accordian very early (started at 4). Later when I reached the ripe old age of 6, I started music lessons outside the home. When I was in 5th grade, one of the women in the church started teaching some of us to play the ukulele and we would sit around and play gospel songs. On Saturday night a bunch of us would take our ukulele's and a few guitars and go ride the Staten Island Ferry for hours and play and sing - what fun those times were. We had a captive audiance. I started playing the guitar in high school, and our youth group would play gospel music at the mission downtown. After high school, I went off to college and got away from all of this. Life seemed to take over and the accordian, trumpet, guitar, ukulele, etc were packed away in a closet. About three or four years ago I got an XM radio and started listening to the BG Gospel channel and was hooked. Decided I wanted to start playing the banjo, so I went out and bought one, got a book and haven't looked back. I am not good, but I sure know a lot of gospel songs which I hack away at. I really don't know any of the traditional bluegrass music, but am having the time of my life playing my banjo now. Over the holidays I dug out my old guitar and ukulele and have started playing them too. What a wonderful Savior we have. What a joy it is to praise Him through this great music. Thank you for letting me be part of this group, it has been so encouraging to read the paths you have taken. Pat
