Another Bacophone Plus convert

From Ohio Senator on 1/27/2015 3:03:22 PM

Just added the Bacon tone ring to my Galax WL today and already loving it.

Maybe adds a little more volume, but overall a bit fuller, definitely more sustain, and really woke up the 4th string!  Totally was worth it.

Did you need to change any other components or did the Bacon tone ring just fit in?

And does anyone know if a similar conversion can be done to a (non-plus) Bacophone, adding the WL tone ring to it?

Looking at the diagrams on the Stew Mac page (from Ohio Senator's other post banjohangout.org/group/bartrei...blog/8309) it seems like one can go from Galax to 'Bacophone Plus' without changing much but going from the Bacophone isn't possible (or not easily).

The WL scalloped portion of the tone ring is usually 1/4in thick, and it sits on a shelf that deep on the rim. So, going from a bacon ring to a WL is possible, but would required the rim to be turned to fit the new WL.
In terms of the swap up to the Bacophone +, adding the Stew Mac Bacon ring on top of the Stew Mac WL Bart uses is pretty easy and requires nothing extra.
(I did us a small wooden dowel to slowly lift the top portion of the WL off, working slowly around the ring to wedge the top off all at once and without marking anything up. Also a rubber mallet to tap the new bacon on lightly, but you can just wing it pretty easy).

I have had "Liza" for about two months and she is purrrrrrrrrrfect!. Bought new the Bacophone from Elderly.
Wow! I put a bridge from Doc's Banjos on it and it just sounds great! I did play the Galax @ elderly with the Whyte Layde Ring.........this is just different and sweet.
Enjoy -BC Always looking for new friends.....

I'd really like to play a Reiter bacophone and see the difference... Have Stew Mac parts banjo WL arriving tomorrow... tempted to do a twofer!

Swapped out the 5/8 Kat Eyz bridge on my Bacophone plus for a Buckeye banjo 9/16. Bright the action down a bit closer to where I want it, and overall I think it rounded out the tone nicely. These are really great bridges.
