Accidental Round Peak!

From karen627 on 3/6/2014 6:31:07 PM

I hope you don't mind my crashing the group (and my apologies for the length of this first post.)  Last week I ordered a used Bart Reiter Standard that a music store advertised in the BHO classifieds.  Got it a couple of days ago, in immaculate condition and sounding as great as the salesman promised -- except it has a 12" rim and a star inlay on the 5th fret.  (How that 5th fret inlay escaped me when I was looking at the pictures is beyond me.)

So instead of paying a fair price for a Standard, it seems I accidentally got a nice deal on a Bart Reiter Round Peak.  I hadn't considered the Round Peak when I was banjo hunting, but now that I have it, I love it.

Funny enough, I did a quick search for the serial number to see if anyone here had ever owned it, and yes, it was once owned by a BHO member.  I'm not sure what the etiquette is surrounding mentioning members who aren't expecting to be talked about, and when it doubt, don't.  But thanks, fellow BHO member, for being so good to it when you had it.

Hi. If you know who the BHO member is, you could send him/her a private message.

I actually wanted to, but that function wasn't available on the member's page. Still, it was nice to learn a bit about the history of my new-to-me banjo.

Congratulations. Sounds like you got a great deal.

Why don't you post a few more details about the banjo and see if the previous owner responds.

Sure. In fact, it has a goat skin head from you, thanks to the first owner. Serial number is 3696, and it was originally shipped to a music store in Salt Lake City in September of 2012. (And it's all I can do to put it down.)

My heads are only advertised on the BHO. So chances are good that the head was sold to a member here.

Karen, I posted a picture of my RP to the right. Looks like it may be same banjo. Funny thing is that I sold it to a guy in Canada to fund eventual purchase of a Reiter Bacophone....mine was a great banjo and I wish I still had it...whether it's mine or another....you should hang on to it....congrats, Rick

Rick, thanks -- and yes, it's your old Round Peak. It's traveled quite a bit -- I ordered it from a music store in Virginia. Whoever owned it between when you had it and now took great care of it -- it still plays, sounds, and looks great. I think it's finally in its permanent home.

If some of these old banjos could talk .... would be fun to know the history of them. Glad you put the pieces of that puzzle together.
