Arm Rest for a 11" Reiter Banjo

From Ragtimejoe on 9/7/2013 6:03:44 AM

I'm looking for an arm rest that will fit as flush as possible on my Reiter banjo.

I'm just trying to cover the sharp edge of the hoop. I'd use a bluegrass arm rest, but the spacing won't fit.

I'm pretty sure an Ome would fit, but I hate to spend $75 dollars.

Anybody have any other options?

Thanks

Joe

What's wrong with an inexpensive Vega style?
Vega style, rolled sheet metal armrest, nickel plated, fits 11" diameter banjo rims; $8 from Bob Smakula..

It sits too high for me. I want one that sits as close to the head as possible.

I use a BanjoMate Thinline armrest and love it (from Little Mountain Music). Doug is Great to deal with. He ships very fast too.

You can use a Vega style but reverse the tension hooks and it will fit very low. You do lose the effect of the hooks. Search Lo Gordon"s site. He sells his models with a dropped rest.

I have a Standard. This stewmac armrest looks as though it would fit:

I have an extra one. I'd gladly trade it for a CD or a set of strings or something.

I had a banjo with a Vega style rest that had been squished somehow and the rest (Chinese) had been pushed down and was touching the tension ring. This is easily accomplished so that the part that rests on the top of the hooks is bent so it will fit OVER the hooks and rest on the ring.

Here's a link to a pic I had of the arm rest touching the tension ring:

That's exactly what I'm after, a flush fit and cheap. Thanks

Here's a link that "sorta" shows the dropped arm rest on a Lo Gordon Cedar Mountain. The two hooks holding the armrest are rotated 180 deg which you can see in the photo. I used to do this on my Reiter's - and despeding on the model, you may need a 2" tension hook, or cut off a couple of screw threads to get a tight fit. I decided, personally, to go back to the normal position, as the dropped rest allowed me to snag knit shirt sleeves on the strings at the tailpiece. But, it's a zero cost option you could try.

I have a Lo Gordon CM fretless that came with two tension hooks reversed to mount the armrest lower. I returned the hooks to the "normal" position because a)I prefer the higher arm rest and b)I was concerned about the effect of two hooks not providing any tension.

Turns out that B needn't have been a concern since the drum dial readings were the same both before and after. Kinda made me wonder how many tension hooks are really needed to maintain a good, even pressure for the head.

Anyway, I'd say if you want a low armrest, reversing two hooks and going the Lo Gordon way is something to try.

Has anyone ever tried one of these?

I have used the wire type before - these are height adjustable to set exactly where you want:

This is exactly what happened when my arm rest got jammed down in shipping:
"Bottom edge of slots are recessed to slide more easily under the hooks."
