I don't think that will happen. When I ordered my custom banjo way back in 1994, Bart told me to hang on to it saying he would not be doing that kind of work indefinitely. I don't know when the last of these whyte Laydie deluxe models was made...but it was long ago.
$5000 seems VERY high. And the seller is totally unknown (red flags again ?) But I can't remember how long it as been since one of these was offered.
Interesting for sure....

Hah! Ha! For a few grand more you could own an original vintage one. (Probably broken in.) I have a '23 and am hap-hap-happy.
Silly pricing; whatever the market will bear, eh?

I think even Wyatt Fawley's fancy repros aren't this much! My dh keeps reminding me that when it's *really* time for the next banjo, it will be there.

Also, they have it listed as pre-1980, but the serial number indicates it was built in 1996. Small beans, I know, just worthy of mention.

I spoke with the seller. I don't know her personally - but I e-mailed through ebaY and she did provide a phone number. She as happy to answer my questions. Based on my conversation - it all seems legitimate to me.
Apparently the banjo was purchased new in 1996 by her then significant other. Very unfortunately, he died of a heart attack six months after the banjo arrived. It has been in the closet - virtually un-played - since then. She kept the banjo for sentimental reasons - but now has decided to let some things go. The seller is a musician and well aware of the quality of the instrument. As Bart Reiter wrote on my group blog - she discussed the price with him (that was the basis for the adjustment).
I think this is a probably a very good buy. I was SERIOUSLY considering bidding. But I just don't need another banjo. I hope one of you will bid on it so that I am no longer tempted.....

I'm going to start digging holes in my backyard right now. If I find a bag of gold, that banjo is mine! I only need to find two ounces, and I'll have money left over, so the odds are good.
