John,
Got the head yesterday. Surprisingly it only took about an hour to take the entire banjo apart (I'd never taken a neck off before) , polish all the metal, put the new head on and put everything back together.
I used this as an opportunity to put on the new ferrule that had broken off. Bart was extremely kind to send me a new one. Thank you Bart.
I can tell the skin head will take a little while to break it, but I can also tell the sound will be great once it does. I restrung the banjo with PF-180's (I wanted a little more resistance) and a 5/8" Sasomen (sp) bridge. I plan to post an MP3 once I feel everything has settled down.
Thanks for all your help. You made the process extremely easy - much easier than I expected.
Now I'm debating if I want to try one on my bluegrass banjo......
Joe
